Phew, that was tough going. Thanks to everyone who battled their way around some quite physical terrain, especially the Yellow who were forced along the rides. Sorry to all the Orange runners who found it just too technical - long times and a high drop out rate. The course was well within BOF Guidelines (on paper) but the indistinct rides penalised those who missed the controls and kept on wandering, and wandering...pace counting would help next time if you ever come back!
A number of very experienced orienteers made some basic mistakes on and after what I thought was a very easy control (2nd on the Green, Blue and Brown). Instead of picking up the 100 foot deep river valley that ran NE to SW they decided to take a 180 degree turn and headed off the map!
Fortunately we had glorious weather (it rained just as I left the forest) and nobody turned hypothermic. Special thanks to Andy Curtis who acted as Assistant Controller to John Crosby, visiting the control sites, putting out and taking in controls and SI units. Andy did comment early on that the rides were indistinct and he was right.
Just be thankful the event happened at all - the forest contractors moved in a couple of days before the event and cleared the area 50 metres beyond the start/finish. By demolishing the track we lost our convenient parking area so sorry for the 750 metre walk in and out.
SI worked perfectly - the club has a new laptop which Andrew Nicoll only configured late on aturday night. Nicola Crosby did a great job computing including data entry, downloads and results.
