Officials' Comments

Planner

Well, an interesting day for what is probably my swansong with NATO as a planner, as the weather threatened but did not deliver, so thank you to everyone who braved the threats from the Met Office for what it seemed was a good event for everyone. It‘s unfortunate that no-one did what I thought was an interesting yellow course (I could have saved putting out control 120!) especially as the design of it caused more discussion between the controller and myself than any other.

Only one person mentioned our deliberate mistake in the descriptions for the longer courses (we knew about it on Friday but felt that experienced orienteers would understand and the others wouldn‘t notice and just head for the obvious flag)

Finally thanks to my wife and son without whose help on Saturday the controls would not have been out, to AOL and Orange without whom the event would not have happened and to Blagdon Estate (and the deer who seemed to deliberately put on a display near the finish for our entertainment).

Andy Clarke

Controller

My duties elsewhere forced the timescales for the last two weeks before the event to be very compressed. My apologies to NATO, especially to planner Andy, and printer Adrian.

Apologies to the Blue and Green course competitors too - because this compression and the need to make a number of late map changes introduced two problems which did not become apparent until I was checking on the morning.

Firstly control 142 was a late addition to increase the technical difficulty of Blue. Having agreed the site together a week before, Andy couldn't find the marker cane when setting out controls. He found a ditch that matched the map and description and told me what he'd done. On the morning, I couldn't find the cane either, but his placement was fine. But that means that there is a least one more ditch in that block - and either the distinct tree is too far SE - or the ditch bend is shown incorrectly.

Secondly control 134, narrow ride, NW end. The problem is the new wide ride, NW-SE, and the three hides along it, running almost parallel 40m away. This new ride was added to the map a week before the event, and the three hides added by eye. On the morning, I could see that the NW hide was not far enough to the NW, so decided to move the kite for 134 about 30m NW to align better with the hide - as this was a likely attack point. 134 remained within the gap of the narrow ride, which itself extends a little further NW than mapped. This of course made the control slightly wrong with respect to the river bend, but I felt it was an open enough area not to be difficult to see from a far distance.

Despite the foregoing, I believe everybody enjoyed Andy's courses, and I hope that you, the competitors, relished a run in the snow as much as I did checking controls with the company of deer on a rather chilly, white morning.

I understand that Blagdon Estate may be happy for a larger area to be mapped; an extended and completed map together with adequate parking could provide a fine venue for a full-scale District event.
