I love planning at Druridge because it gives me the incentive to go there lots. It was terrific in the sunshine today, not quite so attractive in the cold wind on Saturday putting out controls along the dunes. I was grateful to get out of the wind as I ducked down into the control sites.
Nearly all of the comments I heard were positive so I guess you enjoyed it. I had a couple of suggestions about control positioning which would have improved individual legs which I hadn't noticed. Thanks for those, now I have extra knowledge for next time.
On all the "technical" courses - Short Green to Brown - my philosophy was to challenge you to change speed and concentration from the dunes to the park. In the case of Blue and Brown I was able to challenge you to really switch back on again by going out to the dunes at the end. Even in the park, coming in from the high concentration required for the dunes, it was important not to switch off too much and realise when to switch back on. A lot of people related problems at 113 (Boulder on a hill) where they were on the wrong path and looked down at the lakeside. My conclusion is that this was due to not "switching back on" and studying the map closeley enough.
Light Green had a taste of the more difficult dunes and then some faster stuff round the park with many changes of path to keep you alert.
It was disappointing there were not more competitors on White thru Yellow as these were designed to show the dunes (without challenging you to navigate through them) and have a nice run alongside the lake.
Thank you to John Crosby for printing the maps when I couldn't do it (I was laid up with a cold all week) and all those who stayed back to collect in controls. It took me 5 hours to put them out and they were collected in a little over 30 minutes !!
