Planners Comments
Well interesting isn't it - planning needed to take account of areas set aside for Mountain Bikers and an Environmental Exclusion Zone which, maybe, achieved our objective of making them as unlike "Kielder" as possible, with lots of running, staying near the bottom of the guidelines for length and avoiding all the areas that the planner found too slow going and unpleasant. I think a few White runners were disconcerted to find that two line features used were a stone wall and an Earthbank - both legitimate line features easy to follow even if "off path" - hopefully drawing you to more technical courses in future. Now the Thanks: Firstly Fred Miller for his patient mapping of an area that will never be among his favourites and putting up with Colin and I spotting lots of changes required - but we all agree you have to map the Owl. Paul Boyles for the "bridge" used on the "junior" courses, Colin Matheson for his zealous controlling and assistance in control placing and retrieval (and Ro for the latter), the Lakey family for more retrieval (sorry about 101), Alex Crosby for sterling carparking and my wife for sandwiches and traipsing round with me planning (which includes slogging through less pleasant parts of the area and losing her gloves).

Controller's Comment
The area at Kielder lends itself pretty well to Light Green, Short Green and Green but is a bit complex for the easier courses and has a bit too much track running for the longer courses. Andy decided to use the area north of the river for the easier courses, but there are issues with mountain bikers using some of the paths so by following earthbanks and walls the white was whitish and the yellow was yellowish. The Forestry Commission asked us not
to use the area with bike trails so the route had to loop around the top.
Restrictions were imposed on an area used by the Brown Course, but it was pretty rough and I think runners would have had enough by the time they got to the far end. I made some suggestions to Andy the planner about how to get the runners off the tracks and into the forest and in the end I think the courses were sufficiently interesting and challenging. The Orange was well within the required technical standard but I do know that the first 5 controls caused some issues - they were my suggestion rather than the planner's so blame me if you ran the Orange and didn't find the first part quite as straightforward as you would have expected. One of our more experienced orienteers has learned a lesson about looking at the map - don't assume when you see a finish banner that it is necessarily on your course!
