Planners Comments
Firstly a huge lot of thanks - Adrian Barnes for a great map, getting my descriptions right when I was working in pain and helping get the controls out (with Trish) while the gulls were still coughing. NATO for letting me have first crack at this new challenging area with all of its complexity, Trish for putting up with my lack of availability due to my two centred lifestyle and inconvienent infirmity and for taking on the longest part of the control putting out and retrieving. (Patrick's help in retrieving was also appreciated)
As usual I thank my long suffering wife for her assistance and everyone who helped make the event a success. Now an apology to those who got faulty loose control descriptions. It was entirely my fault for trying to add them at the last minute using a printer next to Elaine while she was trying to get to sleep for a dawn start the next day - lesson learnt.
The strange shape of the area lead to most of the planning decisions - once I decided to keep the shorter courses in the southern dunes there was only one possible White course - which decided Start and Finish (it did also allow a 1:5000 map for the shorter courses to let you see the contour detail).
The philosophy of the technical courses was simple - runners can always tell where they are E-W easily in such a narrow area so I tried to make it difficult to know how far you'd travelled N-S - from comments it seems to have worked.
I swear that the undergrowth had grown appreciably higher when I was retrieving controls than when I put them out earlier in the day - so you can guess that it was much higher in places than when I completed planning - I hope no-one suffered as result.
The ordered weather was perfect (apart from the sunburn some of us got as a result) and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The only fly in the ointment was the complete disappearance of one control - fortunately late enough not to affect the event significantly.
The map adjoins the other Druridge Bay (Country Park) map to the North - so next time we may be able to use the parking there and let the shorter courses see the other aspects of the area.
