Planner's Comments
It seemed like a good turn out today and saw lots of smiles on people's faces. There's some nice sections of slow and fast terrain at Blagdon, so tried to incorporate some variety into the courses. The north-west of the estate is being subject to felling at the moment, so I avoided putting controls in that area. The last section on the light green to brown course involved navigating between ditches amongst the slow undergrowth near the finish. This provided entertainment for spectators and competitors alike, although there may be a few nursing scratches from the brambles. There have been some new un-crossable gates put up around the geese houses which weren't marked on the map. This did slow down some competitors who found their route blocked on the longer legs going east-west.
Some children decided to try their whistles out which unfortunately caused some competitors to be distracted and lose minutes coming to their aid. They got a stern telling off. It goes without saying that if you do hear someone blowing a whistle, then assume that someone is in genuine distress and it's not some kids mucking about.
This was my first time planning an event and have only run brown courses having got back into orienteering a couple of years ago after a long absence since childhood. Consequently, I've had to study the BOF guidelines as to what is acceptable in terms of length and technical difficulty for the shorter courses. I hope they were okay for everybody. The white and yellow were surprisingly difficult to plan. Thank you to Paul Boyles for showing me the ropes.

Controller Comments
A big thank you to everyone who took part today and especially the helpers on the day. It's great when events run relatively smoothly and we have no major dramas. A massive thank you to Alastair Mackenzie who sacrificed his run somewhat when he heard what he thought was a distress whistle. Alastair deviated from his run, only to find it was a false alarm, so he could then carry on. Its one of the great parts of Orienteering for me, when someone will go to someone's aid during a competition. There's probaly not many other sports around where that would happen.
I hope you all enjoyed your runs today. I thought Frank did a great job on his first planning job and produced some good challenging courses. I was a little dubious at first when I saw the finish area and all the tall vegetation around it, and wondered whether sending people into it would be a good idea. The jury is out I think for some people. I had mixed comments from people as to whether they liked it or not. It certainly added a different dimension to the end of the course and really got you thinking as there were clear runs through the vegetation but you had to pick them out. I will be very interested to see people's route choice on their final three or four controls as watching from the finish area, you could see people taking different route choices. Please put your courses up on RouteGadget. It's not only good for other Orienteers to learn and develop, but essential for planners and controllers, so we can see whether we planned the courses well.
Blagdon is a lovely area, with plenty of different challenges. We don't use the area that often and it is, for me, a great place to offer all abilities a challenge as it's great for the Junior courses as well as the longer ones. Don't know how many of you saw the diversity of the wildlife, or whether it had retreated early on, with the sound of Orienteers, but whilst I was there, I've seen Deer, Hares, Rabbits, Pheasants and a Stoat. I'm led to believe that there are otters there two, but never got the chance to see them.
Thank you very much to the people who donated the cakes and buns. We made a massive £66 for the juniors and there wasn't a bun left at the end.
Finally. We have the Kielder Event coming up soon at the end of April. I have managed to secure the Youth Hostel at Kielder for an overnight stay on the Saturday Night. There are a few spaces still left available, if anyone would like to take up the offer. It's open to all Orienteers and will be a great chance to enjoy a social evening and save travelling up on the Sunday Morning. There will also be a Junior Coaching session held on the Saturday at Kielder for those interested. Cost for the weekend will be £25 per Adult, to include Evening Meal, Overnight accommodation and Breakfast on the Sunday Morning. Juniors will be same price, but will include coaching, swimming at Leaplish and entrance to the event on Sunday. If anyone is interested or require further details, please e-mail me at boyles.pATbtinternet.com.
Hope to see you all at future events.
