The Club Champions will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on October 11th
From the Planner
Well, what did I learn from this weekend? Quite a few things really. Firstly. when putting controls out, always triple check you have the right box on the stake. I apologise to the competitors who had 117 and 184. I put these out the day before and both the controller and I checked them, and we're still scratching our heads as to how we got them the wrong way round. Thank you to the first competitor back for letting us know, so we could remedy it as quickly as we could. Secondly, an area can change so much within a year. I thought I would leave the visit to the area for planning as late as possible to ensure that the vegetation was at its highest when planning. I'd sat down with the map in July to look at the area and had pencilled some controls in before visiting the area. The surprise I got when I arrived at Slaley was to say the least, unbelievable. The lovely wooded area to the North, East and South had been completely felled. The Eastern area (Which we didn't use) couldn't be used at all due to the majority of it being fenced off and the Forestry Commission asking us to keep clear. If only they could have thinned out some of the dark green area as well, but I suppose that what you get in a commercial forest.
The area was fairly physical and the majority found it hard going, but I did see some smiles when people returned. The juniors in particular seemed to be all coming back with smiles on their faces, and despite the courses been slightly on the longer side, still had plenty of energy left when they'd finished.
Thank you very much for the comments at the end. As a result of a few comments, we are looking at producing seperate control descriptions for those that want them. I have to say, we tend not to produce them within NATO, but there is a demand for them, it seems, and it would be foolish to ignore that. As a result, Fred will be putting this into the planning guide.
A big thank you must go to the farmer. I had visited the area four times and not seen any animals in the Northern part until yesterday, where there were approxinately 20 cows and 8 calves. All very big, very nosey and surprisingly very quick. Cows, Calves and orienteers in bright lycra do not mix well. Fortunately the farmer kindly agreed to move them out for the day. I apologise if you managed to step in a cow pat. I am assured it is supposed to be lucky!!!
For those of you that visited the Northern part, did you see the old car that was in the wooded area. The controller and myself had a great discussion about firstly, how it got there and secondly what sort of car it was. We initially thought it was a beetle, but Fred thought it was an old Ford. If you saw it, and think you know what it was, please let me know when you see me. Whoever had been driving it, was driving it illegally, 'cos the tyres were bald!!!
After the lovely wet British Summer, we are now into the traditional warm sunny Autumn season. The weather today was ideal Orienteering weather and the forecast is for the weather to get better over the next week, so all bodes well for the October Odyssey next weekend. Thank you all for turning up, I hope you enjoyed the courses and a big thank you to the band of NATO members who helped out over the day.
