Planner's Commentary
It was nice to see as many people out enjoying the autumnal sunshine in Morpeth. Most of you seem to have enjoyed yourselves from some of the remarks I heard at the finish. It’s not the most technically demanding of areas we have but using the road and path network in the estate to link the common to the wood gave me the opportunity to set you some route selection problems. By weaving round those deeply incised valleys in the woods made a few more. It was gratifying to hear how you’d tackled the challenges and many of you had found what I consider to be the best choices. The longer courses all had similar challenges in the woods deciding whether to stick to the paths or slide down and crawl up the valley slopes. Blue and Brown had to go to the end of the wood where there is not so much choice so I put in a lot of controls to keep up the interest plus, at least one person I heard from went up the wrong spur to the little knoll – you have to look closely at the map there to see that there are three spurs. I managed to go down the wrong one when putting out the control!
I kept the White, Yellow & Orange courses on the common to avoid crossing roads (the north south road between the estate and woods does carry some quite fast moving traffic – too fast, sometimes, I think) and, after the summer and autumn we have had it is very wet. I did mark the worst patch as a marsh so hopefully you managed to avoid the knee deep mud there. I hope my decision to give you a larger scale with a larger course marking was OK? It did mean that the descriptions had to be on the back but I felt it made it clearer for you.

I’ve extracted a couple of bits to show what I think is the best route on the two longest legs which might be of interest. The first was common to Green, Blue & Brown (Short Green joined in part way), the second only to Blue & brown, although the first part of the route was shared also by Short green & Green) I’d be pleased to hear any observations you might have about the area, map or courses so that I can improve my knowledge of what you like/dislike.
