Planner's Comments
Now that was an event worth waiting for (I hope). I seem to be unlucky, as I'm the club official who has had to postpone most events recently due to weather. Well this time the delay (due to snow meaning we had no parking) has made the area even better with the marshes becoming firmer and travel much quicker (I still haven't managed not to get wet feet when visiting controls across the marsh). A larger than normal turn out (with a number of faces I didn't recognise and some I haven't seen for a while) justified the effort from Adrian (he thinks I'm stubborn), Patrick and George (who wasn't able to be there to see the results of his first efforts as an organiser). We also seem to have a fair take up on the string (definitely more adventurous than people might expect) and the White course -the "adventure element" of which seemed to be well enjoyed and was probably much more pleasant than a few weeks ago. I would apologise for the heather (which came in multiple grades including; fast run, runnable, I should run this, I'll try and run, no way am I running and do I have to go through THAT?) but we did try to either avoid it in planning or give you an option to avoid it (probably by taking on a marsh however).
Ray Demesne is a gem of an area and I'm glad to have had the chance to plan there. Hopefully Ray Estate and the farmer will be happy to let us come back in a couple of years for another event and I suggest that if you missed it this time you do everything you can to make it next time!
Apart from thanking all those above, I'll also, (as usual), thank my wife and Fred and Jeremy for help in control management.

Controller's Comments
OK, the weather turned at the end of the event but that was nothing compared to the conditions when we had originally had to cancel this event in March. During that week, it was cold with blustery snow showers down here in Morpeth but up there it was positively arctic, the parking field had become impassable and the backup parking was under about 5 inches of snow, quite apart for the danger of venturing out onto the moorland in an easterly gale. It was really quite benign today.
I thought Andy planned some interesting and challenging courses. The Finish had to be as remote as it was because the large out of bounds had been used for lambing. Happily, the walk was level along the old railway line and the wind was on your backs. The White course was probably the most difficult to plan and it stretched the planning guidelines almost to breaking point in it’s technical difficulty. I was happy with it because I think the element of adventure was there for our younger competitors rather than the usual sterile run round tracks and paths. Judging by the times you took, perhaps the guidelines don’t give you enough credit for the skills you have? Out on the moor on the longer courses it was more difficult navigationally today as the heather is such a uniform colour and disguises the contours – it was actually easier with a coating of snow, strangely, but physically more demanding.
Congratulations to George Hare on his first effort as an Organiser. Unfortunately, he was not able to be there on the rearranged date to see the results of his meticulous attention to detail – Patrick ably picked up those reins. A few small issues only came up as far as I could see. Perhaps a few more streamers from Finish to Download (which could have been more prominently signed) – although you did all still have your maps at that point ! We ran out of maps on some courses. We are a club with small finances and cannot afford to waste money on printing wasted maps so try to anticipate how many will turn up. Today we got caught out. It will be added impetus to pursue printing on demand at the race site – although that means investing in a portable generator.
I’m always pleased at the way the NATO event machine cranks into action – hardly any instructions necessary, everyone just turns up as asked and does their job like clockwork.
Finally, thanks to Alasdair Wilson for helping me with the final morning check of all controls – it saved me a very, very early start !!
