Planner's Commentary
Interesting day at Simonside; a place I now know rather well having spent something like 30 hours out there planning the event (however the scenery and the wildlife made it pleasant). Reasonable turnout for the 60 minute score which I planned on the basis that no-one would be able to get all the controls within the time limit; then I heard that Duncan Archer was coming! Fortunately the plan still worked and he missed one out and took time penalties. Still a great run (and he still had the energy to retrieve controls afterwards).
On the other courses White was deliberately at the bottom of the range because of the climb required (No choice really). On the Yellow I'm intrigued by two youngsters who seem to have taken a very long time between a path junction and a control down the path about 350m , I can only assume they now know what a "180 degree error" is!
The Orange course was planned to be a true TD3 course with two specific controls challenging at the top of that grading. One required competitors to go to "an above ground feature within sight of a line feature" with the control on the blind side of it (visible if you looked in the right direction at the previous control) and the other invited them to "travel on a rough bearing between two line features" (although they did have a longer path option) both specific challenges the guidelines for Orange suggest. The Light Green unfortunately needed a lot of climb if the best terrain were to be used and we designed it in early so you could get it over with before you got too tired (however that may have failed!).
I have to thank Alasdair for very interactive controlling (the sight of us both having to rest after a climb and affirming "that can't be on the Orange" must have been amusing) Fred and Adrian for their efforts (Adrian's mapping was very responsive to a planner's needs even if we can't agree what the feature at 147 is) and Richard and Duncan (the fit ones) for getting the "high altitude" controls. I'm also going to thank the start team for happily taking on managing the successful string course (I'm afraid that as the experiment of starting the string alongside the main courses has worked well twice now it has become an accepted option -in other words you're stuck with it!) and Peter for his normal unsung efforts (and his support team of course) as well as Andrew for coping with the "death" of the control furthest from assembly with equanimity and Bob for getting the cars parked and stopping anyone from getting knocked down.
Thanks also to the Forestry Commission for access and providing a key to the gate -without which control placement and retrieval would have been even more arduous I'm not sure if the Planner should thank the organiser but as I want to sleep with her tonight thanks Angel
